From 1 October 2022, relevant air conditioners over 65kW must meet new minimum energy performance standards outlined in the new Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards (Air Conditioners above 65kW) Determination. Suppliers are also required to register in-scope products through the Energy Rating Product Registration System.
What air conditioners above 65kW are covered?
The Determination covers the same types of air conditioners as the existing Determination for air conditioners 65kW and below (Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards (Air Conditioners up to 65kW) Determination). These are air conditioners that:
- use the vapour compression cycle
- are air-to-air
- have a cooling capacity or heating capacity (for heating only products) greater than 65kW
- are single and/or three phase
- are ducted and/or non-ducted
- are unitary, single-split or multi-split.
A key difference is that portable and water-to-air air conditioners are excluded from the new Determination.
How does this apply to existing stock?
All models of existing, relevant air conditioners over 65kW that meet the minimum energy performance standards must be registered by 1 October 2022 to be sold in Australia.
Stock of air conditioners over 65kW models that were imported into or manufactured in Australia prior to 1 October 2022 and cannot meet the minimum energy performance standards can be sold until exhausted. New stock that does not meet the minimum energy performance standards may not be sold after 1 October 2022.
What if the import or manufacture of a relevant air conditioner over 65kW is delayed and is not received by 1 October 2022?
Suppliers need to contact the Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards Compliance team by emailing [email protected] and providing documents that show:
• when the product was ordered
• the product’s expected time of arrival, and
• why the product didn’t arrive on time.
The team will contact you to assist you with next steps.
